LIFE SURROUNDING SPECULAR

Did you ever watch "The OC" on television? Life around here is totally like that, except without all the teen drama.

Specular Interactive is located in the city of Irvine in the heart of Orange County in fabulous Southern California. There are few places in the country that provide such a well rounded environment as Irvine. The weather is mild year round, the dining and shopping is world class, the schools are top rated, there are parks everywhere and housing choices are plentiful. Irvine's proximity to many SoCal attractions is ideal. In less than 30 minutes you could be at the beach or Disneyland. In an hour you could be in Hollywood, San Diego or Mexico. In less than 2 hours you could be skiing in Big Bear or at a spa in Palm Springs.

Irvine is a fantastic place to live and work but if you are still not convinced, allow us to drop a few facts:

In 2008 CNNMoney.com selected Irvine as the fourth best place to live in the United States.

In June 2009, the FBI reported that Irvine had the lowest violent crime rate among cities in the United States with
   populations of more than 100,000.

Business Week magazine named Irvine as one of the "20 Cities Best Suited to Withstand a Recession".

The four high schools in Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) have consistently made Newsweek's list of Top 1,300 U.S.
   Public High Schools

The following companies have their headquarters in Irvine: Blizzard, Gateway, In-N-Out Burger (yum!), Linksys,
Obsidian, Vizio, Kia, Mazda, Samsung and Toshiba. Pretty good company.

There are 44.5 miles (71.6 km) of off-road bicycle trails and 282 miles (454 km) of on-road bicycle lanes in Irvine.

Will Ferrell was born and raised in Irvine. It is why he is so funny.

FAQ

Q: Can you tell me about Specular Interactive?

A: Sure, visit the company page to learn about us and what we do.

Q: What’s it like working at Specular?
A: It's freakin' awesome!

Q: Can you be a little more specific?
A: Fine. We’re a small, tight-knit team made up of creative and experienced game developers. If you like the feel of working on a large, bloated team with a giant project and two managers for every person, Specular isn’t for you. At Specular, we hire only who we need to so everybody makes a difference. We welcome input and feedback from all team members, and encourage a lighthearted work environment.

Q: What technology do you use for your games?
A: We are continually refining our proprietary technology, internally called Spec. Spec consists of a high-performance runtime game engine, a suite of interactive tools, and various plug-ins for popular 3rd party asset creation tools.

Q: What hardware do you use in your arcade games?
A: We use a combination of standard PC components and proprietary circuits. Why, do you know how to solder?

Q: What project are you working on?
A: Can't tell you, it's a secret. We can tell you that we are currently working on another unannounced arcade game with Eugene Jarvis and Raw Thrills. Eugene is a legend in the arcade industry, having developed classic hits such as Defender, Robotron: 2084, Smash TV, and the Cruis’n series. Raw Thrills has enjoyed hit after hit with their recent line of arcade games, and so we’re very happy to be partnering with them again on this high profile arcade game.

Q: Why arcade games?
A: Because they’re fun to work on! High-end AAA console games can require over a hundred developers many years to develop with budgets north of $25M. That’s a lot of people and a ton of money making up that pressure cooker! On the other hand, developing a high-end AAA arcade game can still be done with a small team and a reasonable amount of money. Call us crazy, but this sounds far more fun to us.

Q: Do you hire interns?
A: Yes, but only those who’ve spent lots of their own time developing games and have the work to show us.
